Believing God for Big Things
Joshua 10
1. Believe God for big things
Joshua 10:5-6 (NLT)
So these five Amorite kings combined their armies for a united attack. They moved all their troops into place and attacked Gibeon. The men of Gibeon quickly sent messengers to Joshua at his camp in Gilgal. "Don't abandon your servants now!" they pleaded. "Come at once! Save us! Help us! For all the Amorite kings who live in the hill country have joined forces to attack us."
A. He’s a big God!
Isaiah 40:25-26 (MSG)
So — who is like me? Who holds a candle to me?" says The Holy. Look at the night skies: Who do you think made all this? Who marches this army of stars out each night, counts them off, calls each by name — so magnificent! so powerful! — and never overlooks a single one?
B. He’s a good God
Psalm 119:68a (ESV)
You are good and do good;
C. He’s a personal God
Psalm 37:23 (NLT)
The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
2. Battle for big things
Joshua 10:7 (NLT)
So Joshua and his entire army, including his best warriors, left Gilgal and set out for Gibeon.
1 Timothy 6:12 (NIV)
Fight the good fight of the faith.
2 Timothy 4:7 (NIV)
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Ephesians 6:12 (HCSB)
For our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world powers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavens.
1. Believe what God says
Joshua 10:8 (NLT)
Do not be afraid of them," the LORD said to Joshua, "for I have given you victory over them. Not a single one of them will be able to stand up to you."
Luke 1:37 (ESV)
For nothing will be impossible with God.
2. We put our faith in action
3. Boldly pray for big things
Joshua 10:12-14 (NLT)
On the day the LORD gave the Israelites victory over the Amorites, Joshua prayed to the LORD in front of all the people of Israel. He said, "Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon." So the sun stood still and the moon stayed in place until the nation of Israel had defeated its enemies. Is this event not recorded in The Book of Jashar? The sun stayed in the middle of the sky, and it did not set as on a normal day. There has never been a day like this one before or since, when the
LORD answered such a prayer. Surely the LORD fought for Israel that day!
