Growing in Godliness
1 Timothy 4:7–8
1 Timothy 4:7–8 (ESV)
Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come
Godliness is Passion for God in Action
Genesis 5:21–24 (ESV)
When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.
Hebrews 11:5 (ESV)
By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.
2 Corinthians 5:9 (ESV)
So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
How do we grow in godliness?
1st Godliness Grows When We Say No to Certain Things
Titus 2:11–12 (ESV)
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age
2nd Godliness Grows Through Accessing God’s Power
2 Peter 1:3 (ESV)
His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence
3rd Godliness Grows Out of a Reverence for God
Romans 8:15 (ESV)
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
Hebrews 12:28–29 (ESV)
Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
1 Timothy 6:15b–16a (ESV)
[Jesus] is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light
1 Peter 1:15–17 (NKJV)
but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear
4th Godliness Grows from a Desire for God
Deuteronomy 6:5 (ESV)
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Psalm 42:1 (ESV)
As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.
Philippians 3:8–10a (NIV)
What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ
