One of the greatest revivals we see in the early church is in the city of Ephesus. Ephesus was a pagan city full of evil, including rampant sorcery and witchcraft, sexual immorality, and the worship of false gods. Ephesus was ripe for a Great Awakening! Acts 19 describes the events that led the city of Ephesus to experience such a powerful move of God that it transformed the entire city.

When the Apostle Paul first arrives in Ephesus, he immediately finds some fellow believers, and his first question to them is if they’ve received the Holy Spirit. They responded that they’d not even heard of the Holy Spirit, so verse 6 tells us, “When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.” Paul understood that if the city of Ephesus were going to experience the spiritual awakening God desired, His people would need to be full of the Holy Spirit.

Paul then spends two years preaching powerfully in the synagogues and throughout the city. Verses 11-12 tell us that “God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured, and the evil spirits left them.”

Miracles are taking place, evil spirits are leaving, and then we see a radical event demonstrating just how powerfully God was working in people’s lives. Verse 19 tells us, “A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas.” A drachma was equivalent to a person’s daily wage, so based on the average salary in America today, fifty thousand drachmas would be between four and five million dollars!

People are being saved, baptized, healed, and filled with the Holy Spirit. They are parting ways with evil and turning to Jesus by the thousands. The city of Ephesus was experiencing a Great Awakening! This is what we are praying for our cities, our state, and our nation. We desperately need God to sweep across our land so that we might see millions turn to Jesus as their Savior!

Acts 19 provides great insights into what must happen if we are going to experience such a Great Awakening in our nation today. Believers must be full of the Holy Spirit, praying for people to be healed and sharing the message of Jesus with those who don’t know Him. These 21 days of prayer and fasting are preparing us for a season of increase in what we’ve seen God do over the past several years. God wants to do more through each and every one of us, but for that to happen, we must continue to get ready for awakening!

Scriptures

Acts 19:1-21 (NIV)
“While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied. Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all. Paul entered the synagogue and spoke boldly there for three months, arguing persuasively about the kingdom of God. But some of them became obstinate; they refused to believe and publicly maligned the Way. So Paul left them. He took the disciples with him and had discussions daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This went on for two years, so that all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord. God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding. When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear, and the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power. After all this had happened, Paul decided to go to Jerusalem, passing through Macedonia and Achaia. “After I have been there,” he said, “I must visit Rome also.”

How to Walk in Wisdom

How to Walk in Wisdom

How to Walk in Wisdom

Make coffee. Check. Feed the dog. Check. Finish the dishes. Check. Write my to-do list. Check. Write tasks on my to-do list that I’ve already completed so that I can cross them off. Check. Check. Check! Ah…yes. In an ever-increasing digital world, this is the very reason why I prefer my to-do lists to be on paper!

As we stand at the beginning of a new year with the intention of setting goals and resolutions and new habits to our lives, I’m sure you’re not looking to add another “thing” to your plate. I do believe, however, that there is an essential item for you to put on your (paper or digital) to-do list… Every. Single. Day.

Get wisdom.

Proverbs 4:7 (NLT), “Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.”

The subject of wisdom is a theme that is woven throughout the entire fabric of Scripture. We know that wisdom was found in the beginning – the book of Proverbs tells us that “The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding, he established the heavens.” Wisdom is found from in the pages of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and everywhere in between! There’s even an entire book in the Old Testament devoted to obtaining godly wisdom. Wisdom is essential to God, and I want more of it! One of the most compelling reasons I have discovered to pursue a life of wisdom is found in the New Testament book of Ephesians 5:15-17 (NLT), “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.”

The subject of wisdom is a theme that is woven throughout the entire fabric of Scripture.

Wow. It sounds to me like not only do I need to put “Get wisdom” on my daily to-do list, but I need to place it at the very top!

As we look back at Proverbs 4:7 we can see that the charm and effectiveness of the book of Proverbs is found in its apparent simplicity. “Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do…” Well, there you go. It doesn’t get any clearer to us than that, right? So, we just go and get it? Easy peasy…

Go get wisdom. Saying it like that makes it seem like it would be as simple as picking it up at the grocery store on your way home from work. But we all know that acquiring godly wisdom in our every-day lives is more involved than running an errand. So, how do you “get wisdom”? Here are just a few ways that we can make getting wisdom an attainable priority every single day.

Ask God.

James 1:5 (NLT) says, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” We serve a good Father that gives good gifts to us. He is faithful to His word and if you “ask in faith,” James says, “without doubting” you will receive! What we are witnessing here is a prayer that God will always say “yes” to! How amazing and comforting is that? “If you need wisdom…ask…and he will give it to you.”

Actively pursue wisdom.

Proverbs 2:4-5 (ESV) tells us, “If you seek it [wisdom] like silver and search for it like hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord.” Look at all those action words! Seek. Search. Understand. Pursuing wisdom is not a passive activity. It’s not going to just happen. You’re not going to just wake up one day and discover that you are really wise! (cue singing angel choir) It doesn’t work like that.

Search wisdom out, treasure it, and seek out wisdom for your life…then search it out, treasure it and seek it some more! Search wisdom out in His given Word (the Bible) and in the living Word (Jesus Christ). 1 Corinthians 1:30 (NLT) “God has united you with Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made him to be wisdom itself…”

Jesus Christ is wisdom personified. So, when you pursue wisdom, you pursue Christ Jesus!

Position yourself around wise people.

Proverbs 13:2 (NLT) presents it like this, “Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.” Take a look at the people you surround yourself with, your friends and companions – are they filled with a desire to live a wise and godly life? Or do you find yourself constantly in situations where you are “guilty by association”? If this is this case, then you will want to thoughtfully reevaluate who you are spending time with, and intentionally position yourself around those who you know will make you better!

God’s desire for his people is to “get wisdom.” God wants to set us up with wisdom when it feels like we are surrounded by foolishness. God wants us to rule over our circumstances instead of letting our conditions rule over us as His holy revelation leads us and guides us.

This isn’t self-help and it’s way more than good advice; this is godly wisdom found in God’s Word and it is teaching you how to rule and reign in life!

Get wisdom. Check.

As we approach the end of this fast, you are probably sensing that over the last few weeks God has begun uniquely moving in your heart. Fasting has a way of quieting our hearts so that God will not only start to work in the situations we have been praying for, but he often works deeply in our hearts as we draw close to him.

Leviticus 6:9 gives us a clear picture of God’s presence in our lives. God had descended on the Tent of Meeting and kindled a fire. God’s instructions to his people were to keep the fire burning. God told Moses: “Give Aaron and his sons this command: ‘These are the regulations for the burnt offering: The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar.’”

God would say that every day a burnt offering would be offered in the morning at 9:00 a.m. and in the evening at 3:00 p.m. It was a reminder that devotion to God was to be continual and ongoing.

The idea behind the burnt offering is that of total devotion to God. It was a symbol of the commitment of the worshiper. Nothing would be left of the sacrifice; it would have been totally consumed on the altar in the presence of the Lord.

God has started a fire inside of us through this fast, and it is our responsibility to keep what God has sparked in each of us burning. That will require total devotion to him because it is spiritually deadly to stop what God has started in you.

This fast has given us the opportunity to give up certain things to seek God on a deeper level. While our seeking God may look different after this fast is over, the commitment and intentionality of spending time with him should remain the same.

God has started a powerful work in your life; keep the fire burning.

Scriptures

Leviticus 6:9 (NIV)
“Give Aaron and his sons this command: ‘These are the regulations for the burnt offering: The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar.

Leviticus 6:13 (NIV)
The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.

Research shows that the older we get, the fewer questions we ask. One study shows that a 4-year-old will ask as many as 200-300 questions a day, and between the ages of 2 and 5, children will ask a staggering 40,000 questions! A few of the top 10 questions include: “Where did I come from?” “What is God?” “What does ‘we can’t afford it’ mean?” “Why do I have to go to school?” and “Why can’t I stay up as late as you?”

Kids have the inherent belief that their parents know the answers to all of their questions. Interestingly enough, parents admitted to turning to google for nearly half of their answers!

As believers, we have the most reliable source for life’s toughest questions. Scripture is clear that God desires to answer our prayers – not just some prayers, but all of our prayers. He wants to provide wisdom, direction, and guidance for anything we need. We are invited to approach God with confidence and boldness, believing He will answer, and this truth is covered throughout the pages of Scripture.

Scripture teaches that we are designed to experience answered prayer. God is not afraid of our questions and never grows weary of us coming to Him. In fact, one of Jesus’ instructions is to “Keep on asking…keep on seeking…keep on knocking” What an incredible invitation!

Are there things you’ve stopped asking God for because you either got tired of asking or thought it wasn’t God’s will to answer? Perhaps it’s praying for that lost friend, for the breakthrough in healing, that dream job, a spouse, or to become pregnant. Whatever you’re praying for through this fast, remind yourself that just because it hasn’t happened yet, doesn’t mean it won’t happen soon!

You were designed to see powerful, life-changing answers to your prayers. That’s why James 5:16 tells us, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking, and you will see God answer in a wonderful and miraculous way!

Scriptures

John 14:13-14 (NIV)
And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

John 15:16 (NIV)
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.

John 16:23-24 (NIV)
In that day you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

1 John 5:14-15 (NIV)
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Matthew 7:7-8 (NLT)
“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

If we are not careful, we can look at those mentioned in the pages of Scripture with an unrealistic standard for real world, day-to-day living. People like the prophet Elijah who performed many miracles, from raising the dead to calling fire down from Heaven can feel so far removed from the way we see ourselves and our walk with God. But, the New Testament writer, James, brings our perspective into check by simply pointing out that “Elijah was as human as we are”. He was just like us. He knew what it was like to be disappointed, depressed, and discouraged. He had his own struggles and battles that he fought every single day. So, what is it that made Elijah’s life so different from ours? How did he see such great miracles take place? The game changer was that he was a man who prayed fervently.

The reason that God did incredible miracles in Elijah’s life and many other notable figures in the Bible is because those people sought Him through passionate prayer. S.D. Gordon wrote in his book Quiet Talks on Prayer, “The great people of the earth today are the people who pray. I do not mean those who talk about prayer, nor those who say they believe in prayer, nor yet those who can explain about prayer; but I mean those people who take time and pray.”

As we embrace the call to fervent prayer, there is no doubt that God will do great things through us like he did through Elijah. Elijah fervently prayed, and it did not rain for three and a half years. Then he prayed again, and it began to pour down rain from Heaven. If God answered the prayer of an ordinary person like Elijah’s because he prayed earnestly, we can have confidence He will also answer us as we call on Him!

Scriptures

James 5:16-18 (NLT)
Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.
