Why Am I at War?

Brandon Lindell | March 29, 2026

Scripture

James 4:4: “Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

For the full passage, read James 4:1-6.

Main Idea

Our ongoing struggles and frustrations often reveal a heart divided between God and the world. Lasting peace comes only when we surrender our desires, align ourselves with God, and walk in humble dependence on Him. Friendship with the world puts us at odds with God, but humility, repentance, and submission restore us to His grace.

Why Am I Fighting?

Your battles will just keep resurfacing because what happens on the outside reflects the conflict within.

Why do we blame others for the conflicts in our lives when the real battle is within? How can we begin to identify the desires driving our actions?

Why Isn’t God Fixing This?

If you want to see God move, then you need to pray. Prayer is powerful and effective; it brings heaven into your situation.

Why does God care about the motives behind our prayers and actions, and how can we align our hearts to seek Him rather than our own pleasures?

What Should I Do If That’s Me?

Proud people get opposed. Humble people get grace.

Why is humility so essential for receiving God’s grace, and how can we start to humble ourselves in our daily lives?

Call To Action

Reflect:

Take time this week to honestly examine your heart. Where are your desires creating tension in your relationships or distance between you and God?

Respond:

Repent of misplaced priorities and ask God to realign your desires with His will. Take one practical step to remove something that is feeding worldly desires.

Remember:

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble—there is always more grace available when we turn to Him.
