The Anchor for Your Soul
Hebrews 6:13-20
Hebrews 6:17–19a (ESV)
So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope
1. The Power of the Anchor
Hebrews 6:13–15 (NIV)
When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.” And so, after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
Genesis 22:16b–17a (NIV)
“I swear by myself, declares the LORD... I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore.”
Hebrews 6:16–18 (ESV)
For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation.
2. The Purpose of the Anchor
Hebrews 6:19a (ESV)
We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope
Lamentations 3:21–22
“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases.”
3. The Placement of the Anchor
Hebrews 6:19–20 (ESV)
We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
