In this message, Pastor John Lindell shares an encouraging sermon titled, “Heart of a Conqueror Part 1: Strength.” Join us as we study scripture from the book of Joshua and learn 10 practical ways we can increase our spiritual strength. Our prayer is that this message would remind you of God’s desire to strengthen you and equip you for all He has for your life!
Heart of a Conqueror Part 1: Strength
Deuteronomy 31:7 ESV
Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land that the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall put them in possession of it.
Deuteronomy 31:23 ESV
And the Lord commissioned Joshua the son of Nun and said, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall bring the people of Israel into the land that I swore to give them. I will be with you.”
Joshua 1:6-7 ESV
Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them. Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 ESV
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:17-18 ESV
Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you, as he was with Moses! Whoever rebels against your commandment and disobeys your words, whatever you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and courageous.”
We have to be strong because…
1. There are battles.
2. Strength is the key to victory.
3. Our strength affects other people’s lives.
10 Ways to Increase Spiritual Strength
1. Grow in your knowledge of spiritual principles
Proverbs 24:5 NLT
The wise are mightier than the strong, and those with knowledge grow stronger and stronger.
2. Live in God’s Word and let His Word live in you
Joshua 1:8 ESV
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
3. Give glory to God
Romans 4:18-21 (MSG)
When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn’t do but on what God said he would do. And so he was made father of a multitude of peoples. God himself said to him, “You’re going to have a big family, Abraham!” Abraham didn’t focus on his own impotence and say, “It’s hopeless. This hundred-year-old body could never father a child.” Nor did he survey Sarah’s decades of infertility and give up. He didn’t tiptoe around God’s promise asking cautiously skeptical questions. He plunged into the promise and came up strong, ready for God, sure that God would make good on what he had said.
Romans 4:20 ESV
…he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,
4. Keep your joy in God
Nehemiah 8:10 ESV
…the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Psalm 16:11 ESV
…in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
Psalm 43:4 NLT
There I will go to the altar of God, to God—the source of all my joy.
Matthew 26:41 NIV
“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
6. Allow God to strengthen you
1 Corinthians 16:13 NLT
Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.
Ephesians 3:16 NLT
I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit.
7. Serve God with a whole-hearted commitment
2 Chronicles 16:9 NLT
The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.
8. By faith
Hebrews 11:33-34 NLT
By faith these people overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions, quenched the flames of fire, and escaped death by the edge of the sword. Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight.
9. The words we speak
Proverbs 18:21 MSG
Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit — you choose.
10. Praying in the Holy Spirit
Jude 1:20 MSG
But you, dear friends, carefully build yourselves up in this most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit…
