What Does Salvation Include?
Selected Scriptures
The Greek word that is translated as “healed” is the word sozo.
Romans 10:9 (NIV)
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved [sozo].
Romans 10:13 (NIV)
For "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved [sozo]."
Ephesians 2:8 (NIV)
For it is by grace you have been saved [sozo], through faith — and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.
Sozo is also translated as: healed, get well, made well, well,
recover, restore, cured, made whole.
Romans 14:17 (NIV)
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Righteousness: that deals with the sin issue
Peace: that deals with the deliverance/torment issue
Joy: that deals with healing because joy is the expression of healing
1 Peter 2:24 (NIV)
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.
1. Sozo is used of healing or being made whole
Matthew 9:21 (NIV)
She said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed (sozo: saved, healed, made whole)."
Matthew 9:22 (NIV)
Jesus turned and saw her. "Take heart, daughter," he said, "your faith has healed you (sozo: saved, healed, made whole) ." And the woman was healed (sozo: saved, healed, made whole) from that moment.
Mark 3:1-6 (NIV)
Another time he went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Stand up in front of everyone." Then Jesus asked them, "Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save (sozo: saved, healed, made whole) life or to kill?" But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts, said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it out, and his hand was completely restored.
Mark 6:56 (NIV)
And wherever he went — into villages, towns or countryside — they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed. (sozo: saved, healed, made whole)
Luke 18:35-42 (NIV)
As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, "Jesus of Nazareth is passing by." He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" "Lord, I want to see," he replied. Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight; your faith has healed (sozo: saved, healed, made whole) you."
Acts 4:9 (ESV)
If we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, (sozo: saved, healed, made whole)
James 5:14-16 (ESV)
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save (sozo: saved, healed, made whole) the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Isaiah 53:5 (ESV)
But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed.
2. The word Sozo is connected with deliverance from demonic
power
Matthew 8:16-17 (NIV)
When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and carried our diseases."
Luke 8:35-36 (NIV)
When they came to Jesus, they found the man from
whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured.(sozo: saved, healed, made whole)
Ephesians 4:26-27 (NIV)
"In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.
3. The word Sozo includes resurrection from the dead
Luke 8:49-50 (NIV)
While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. "Your daughter is dead," he said. "Don't bother the teacher any more." Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, "Don't be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed." (sozo: saved, healed, made whole)
1 Timothy 2:4 (NIV)
[God], wants all men to be saved [saved, healed delivered, to be whole] and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
Why Don’t We See More Healing:
1. Unbelief
2. Lack of conviction that God heals
3. Prayerlessness
4. Not full of the Holy Ghost
{note}
1. Healing and deliverance are as much a part of the atonement as is salvation
2. As people were filled with the Holy Spirit healing happened much more often
3. Healing is for you...it is for today
