Overcoming Temptation
John Lindell
Scripture
James 1:13
“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God,’ for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.”

Main Idea
In James 1:13–18, we learn that temptation is unavoidable, but sin is not inevitable. Temptation never comes from God; it begins with deceptive thinking, appeals to our desires, and leads to disobedience and death if not confronted early. God, however, is faithful and always provides an escape, along with better gifts that truly satisfy. Through daily renewal in God’s Word, we can recognize the lies, take the way out, and overcome temptation.
1. Temptation is predictable and is not from God
The difference between a trial and a temptation is how we respond to it.
How does understanding that temptation is not from God—and that we are responsible for our response—change the way you view and fight sin in your life?
2. Temptation Has a Pattern and Starts with a Lie
Temptation is personal…so one of the best guards against temptation is being able to recognize the areas in your life where you are susceptible to temptation.
How does seriously thinking about the long-term consequences of sin affect the choices you make in the moment of temptation? How does the Holy Spirit help us when we think this way?
3. Temptation Has an Escape
You have to assume that if you are facing temptation, God has simultaneously provided a way out.
How does staying aware of God’s good gifts—and staying grounded in His Word—help you choose the way out instead of giving in to temptation?
Call To Action
Reflect:
What is your usual response to temptation? Are you seeking help from God and others?
Respond:
What can you start today to flee from temptation? Memorize 1 Corinthians 10:13.
Remember:
God will always give you a way out of temptation, just ask Him!
