Letting God’s Word Work in You

James 1:22
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

Main Idea

In this passage, James teaches that genuine faith receives the Word humbly and eagerly, without anger or resistance, recognizing its power to transform our lives. However, simply hearing the Word without obeying it leads to self-deception, like looking in a mirror and forgetting what we saw. True blessing comes not from listening alone, but from putting God’s Word into practice.

1. How We Receive the Word

Welcome the Word of God, humbly accept it, and be teachable. Why? Because it can save you!

How receptive are you to God’s Word when it challenges your opinions, habits, or lifestyle—and how can you learn to become more receptive to it?

2. How We Respond to the Word

The blessing doesn’t come in just hearing…it comes in doing!

Thinking about James’ mirror illustration, how do we fall into the trap of hearing but not doing? What are some simple steps you could take to change that?
