What You Say Is What You Get
John Lindell
Scripture
James 3:5:
“So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!”
For the full passage, read James 3:1–12.
Main Idea
Our words reveal the condition of our hearts and the maturity of our faith. James teaches that the tongue, though small, has incredible power—it can guide the direction of our lives, build others up, or cause deep destruction. Followers of Christ must learn to submit their speech to God so that their words bring life rather than harm.
1. Our Tongues Can Condemn Us and Control Us
Our lives are steered by our words; that is the power of the tongue. Death and life are in the power of the tongue.
Have you ever experienced a moment when your words had a bigger impact than you expected, either positively or negatively?
2. Our Tongues Can Corrupt Us and Others
If we let our words go unchecked, they can be like a forest fire, creating arguments, insecurities, and discouragement.
How can certain patterns or habits in the way we speak begin to cause damage before we even realize it? How can we develop the habit of speaking life and encouragement so our words build others up instead of causing harm?
3. Our Tongues Can Cause Compromise
One of the signs that we have a changed heart is that we have changed speech.
How have you seen the way you talk, interact with others, or treat your family change as you grow closer to the Lord?
Call To Action
Reflect:
What do your everyday words reveal about what is happening in your heart?
Respond:
Ask God this week to help you guard your speech. Practice pausing before responding and intentionally speak words that encourage and build others up.
Remember:
Words have power—choose words that bring life, encouragement, and truth.
