1. What is Faith?
Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
1st Faith is confidence
2nd Faith is conviction.
2. Why is faith important?
1st Faith pleases God
Hebrews 11:2 (ESV)
For by it the people of old received their commendation
Hebrews 11:2 (NIV)
This is what the ancients were commended for.
Hebrews 11:8 (NIV)
By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. For he was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
Hebrews 11:24 (NIV)
By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.
Romans 4:3 (NLT)
For the Scriptures tell us, "Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith."
Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
2nd Faith gives us insight into how God works
Hebrews 11:3 (NIV)
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
Hebrews 11:3 (NIV)
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
Hebrews 11:3 (NIV)
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. (NIV)
Hebrews 11:3 (NIV)
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. (NIV)
3. How do I get faith?
Romans 10:17 (NKJV)
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
James 2:17 (ESV)
So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
James 2:17 (NIV)
Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
