Wisdom From Heaven or Hell

John Lindell

Scripture

James 3:13-14
“Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding. For wisdom is more profitable than silver, and her wages are better than gold.”

For the full passage, read James 3:13–18.

Main Idea

True wisdom is revealed not by what we claim, but by how we live. As believers, we must choose between heavenly wisdom, which reflects God’s character and produces righteousness, and demonic wisdom, which is rooted in selfishness and leads to disorder and destruction.

1. The Superiority of Heavenly Wisdom

There is nothing on this earth more valuable than heavenly wisdom.

What does it look like to have heavenly wisdom in our lives and how can we grow in heavenly wisdom?

2. The Signs of Demonic and Heavenly Wisdom

The question that James is asking is what kind of wisdom are you dishing out, living by, or listening to?

What are some indicators that help us identify what kind of wisdom we are operating under?

3. The Significance of Heavenly Wisdom

If you allow demonic wisdom to take root in your life, you will reap confusion, instability, and every kind of evil, but if you pursue heavenly wisdom, the payoff is absolutely incredible.

Who is someone in your life who is a great example of heavenly wisdom? What have been the results of faithful, godly wisdom in that person’s life?

Call To Action

Reflect:

Take an honest look at your attitudes, words, and actions this past week. Do they reflect peace, humility, and sincerity—or envy, selfishness, and disorder?

Respond:

Ask God for wisdom (James 1:5) and intentionally choose to live out one characteristic of heavenly wisdom this week—especially in a challenging relationship or situation.

Remember:

Heavenly wisdom isn’t just something you know—it’s something you live, and it always produces a life that reflects Christ.
